OK. Don't faint. We finally actually found a guitarist!! His name is Scott Bullerwell and he's fantastic! First, he lives like 3 miles from us, loves our music, plays a 7 string, and has a very similar philosophy to us: have fun. I mean, in reality it's really like that. Of course your musical abilities need to be at a professional level and your stage experience needs to be there (and have a job, your own equipment, and transportation which a lot of musicians don't have and we didn't have the time or patience to deal with that...). Scott is super funny and fits in so well that it makes me wonder how long it will last or what will happen. But I do know that we have deserved this for a long time and the newest CD really means we need someone competent and willing to put ihe work. Thank you Scott for joining us.

Our first show is Friday May 19th at On The Y in Sacramento, CA. This is an exciting show as we are the only band and featured for the Gothic Industrial Night happening. Check the live shows page here on the website for info.

Saturday March 4th, 2017

Well, we have decided to start gigging without a guitarist. Thanks to Brad, our CD engineer, and Phil, the bass players' great computer abilities, we will be able to use backing guitar tracks (and even backing vocals for fun!). And you know what? Great! Since there are no guitar players on the planet able or willing to play with us (Glen would. He did the CD. He's just too busy), we can't stand waiting anymore and have to get out there to get this new CD and new music out there. So  we will be playing the stuff rom the newest CD for now and it sounds just like the CD ha ha! Only the guitar player isn't there live, keyboards, drums, and bass and lead vocals are all live of course. The backing vocals would be great to have live but they are fairly complex and I would need 2 people who can handle them and there's isn't any takers anyway. And they may or may not be used. It's the guitar we need the most and we have the perfect guy! We don't have to pay him, we don't have to worry about him getting there, we don't have to worry about his equipment (we are reamping it through one of our guitar amps), and it's played perfectly like the CD so all we needed is for the drummer to have a click track! I am so glad we're getting out there finally.

Of course we are still looking for a guitarist. We have new songs, and we have 2 other CDs with a lot of songs to play. We just don't have the stem files from the other 2 yet so can't do it....

We are really fun to work with, we make it easy for someone to play with us, all the stuff is recorded with charts and we have a home studio with all necessary equipment. I mean, how much easier can we make it?

See you out there!!

Happy New Year!!

The guitarist search goes on... and on.... and on.... but on a brighter note, we've starting working with backing tracks for guitar (and backup vocals, why not...) and so we have a great sound this way! I mean, the guitar is perfect like on the CD, the vocals are bigger because all the harmonies are there (and I, Scarlett, did them all so it's just me singing with them...), and it may work.  We are close to setting up a show, but I want to make sure it's all working good and we don't go into some situation and everything doesn't work.

The CD is selling good, but a live show is always best to get the stuff out there. But we sure got a lot of them! I mean, the first 1000 that came had a big mistake (they forgot the title on the CD) but they sound great! So they had to send us another 1000. And I had won a contest in the first place for a free 1000 CD package. Sure saved us a lot of money!

Next is t shirts... although funds are a little low right now.

And of course we're always working on new songs as well. Just wish a guitar player would come in... but things will always go on.

thanks

Scarlett

Well well well, the CD came out fantastic!! With Brad Barth at Audio Voyage in Livermore CA doing the recording and mixing and then we added the sprinkle of Ty Tabor at Alien Beans Studio (from King's X) doing the mastering we came out with the best product we've ever done!!! The sound is incredible and my songs have the intensity I knew was there. We are just getting it out there and are starting to get some reviews and all.

SYMPHONIC GOTH ROCK  BAND LIPSHOK

New CD “To Haunt a Quiet Realm”  Coming Out Halloween 2016

For Immediate Release

HAYWARD, CA - 10/14/16“I’m crashing inside the madness. Is this such a bad place to be?” is the last line of the chorus to the number 1 track “Bad Place” off of the San Francisco Bay Area hard rockers’ LIPSHOK upcoming CD “To Haunt a Quiet Realm”. It is their 3rd CD in 6 years, and the band has delved more deeply into their heavier musical style. The result is a mix of progressive metal and symphonic rock with layers of vocal harmonies, melodic keyboards and technical guitar shredding driving the tracks. What’s unusual about the band is not only that its lead singer -- Scarlett Dark -- is a woman, but that she is the song writer, keyboardist, lead vocalist, and has trained as an opera singer. What’s also very different about Ms. Scarlett is her day job: she’s a tennis pro. Why the dark side for a tennis pro and opera singer? “It’s in my soul – what I’ve been drawn to since I was a child. My music is just a natural outpouring of my experiences and emotions.”

Most noteworthy on this CD is the help of good friend Glen Avelais playing all the guitar parts. Glen is a Northern California phenom known for his playing in and touring with Forbidden and Testament (and now HateFX) and he brings his guitar style to the music making “To Haunt a Quiet Realm” truly the most intense, creative and unforgettable CD LIPSHOK has done to date. Along with Scarlett is Phil Jameson on bass and Joe Londeree on drums. (LIPSHOK is currently looking for a permanent guitarist.)

The CDs’ #1 track Bad Place” opens with acapella vocals and makes Scarlett your guide into a deep and mysterious world of frightening thoughts and eerie presences and has been made into a great lyric video. “More of You” is a song about obsessive love and loss. The CD also includes 8 other mesmerizing, hard-to-forget tracks including an environmental message and a thought provoking symphony!

This CD will be available at CD Baby along with their other CDs “The Soul of a Broken Mind” 2013 and “In Darkness, Light” 2010. Also at iTunes, Amazon, and other online streaming services.

Well well well, the CD is done!!!!! We are going into production this week. And in the meantime, we have released a fabulous lyric video to the number 1 track on the CD "Bad Place". "To Haunt a Quiet Realm" is definitely the best work LIPSHOK has ever done and we really took our time recording, mixing, and mastering. I spent over 3 and 1/2 hours recording vocals for each song. (Anyone who has been in the studio knows what that is like, you're trying to get the best you can do and that can take many run throughs. Also, I did 6 - 8 tracks on each song so the vocals are HUGE! Of course, I may need some backup singers to get that out live... but of course there's always the way most people do it now, backing tracks...)

My friend Fungyee Lam has done all the beautiful artwork and even had incredible amounts of patience with all the continuous input and idea changes. Thank you my friend.

Glen Avelais did all the fantastic guitar work and we are eternally grateful...

So if anyone knows any guitarists looking for a group of nice people with all the necessary equipment needed and they just show up and play and everything is recorded with charts and ready to go feel free to send them our way!! I've been turning down shows so when we are ready, we can get to work!!

Take care all and get ready for the new CD "LIPSHOK: To Haunt a Quiet Realm"!!!

Love, your writer, Scarlett

April 9th, 2016

Well well well. Things are fascinating and difficult at the same time here in the LIPSHOK camp.

On a super positive note, first, we have the great Glen Avelais (from Forbidden, Testament, HateFX, and Hellbound) playing guitar on the entire new LIPSHOK CD "To Haunt a Quiet Realm". His guitar playing has finally brought the songs to where they're supposed to be. Super dark, super down, super heavy and super melodic. Unfortunately he's too busy to "join" the band, but we are having an awesome time making this CD. It' is definitely the best thing we've done and we are taking our time recording it so that we come up with the best music we can. I (Scarlett, your writer/singer/songwriter/keyboardist) have been doing vocals like I've never done before. And these songs are being produced at the highest level possible. Glen's guitar playing has really inspired me and I am so grateful that finally we have a sound that's what we have been trying to get all along. Estimated finish time is probably June. Maybe earlier. But the finished product will be quite the surprise. Not that we didn't do good stuff before, but this is definitely raising the bar way high for any guitarist that comes on board... which would be nice if we could fine one hint hint..

And interestingly on another note, me, as Debbi (my name in the mundane world) won a huge contest as Oasis Disc Manufacturing that couldn't have come at a better time. I won the Taylor Guitar giveaway and won a Taylor Acoustic 300e guitar AND a 1000 CD manufacturing package. Is that incredible or what? Our first 1000 CD pressing is paid for. And we are in the studio right now. I truly believe in my spiritual path now....

And very important, we are still looking for a guitarist. Obviously Glen Avelais is going to be some big shoes to fill, but that is our situtation. We want to sound as best possible and we certainly want to continue that after this CD is finished and released so we are gonna require a high quality guitar player, especially on a 7 string as all the new songs have a deep down depth that works so great with my voice and keyboards. At least I think so...

And we do have one show coming up. Sat. April 23rd at the Starlite Room in Sacramento. This was scheduled quite some time ago and we thought maybe we would have a new guitarist by then. But we don't, but we do have the great luck that Art Cox will fill in for us and we can play all the best songs off the last CD!!

So in actuality a lot is going on! Oh, I had to buy a new keyboard after my middle board crapped out on me at 3 shows (even after repairs and thinking it was ok before the show). I can not stand when that happens... I mean, I'm not going to pull a Trent Reznor and destroy the offending board on stage or something, but I can not do a show right without all my keyboards in working order...although I know shit can happen... and I can get by.... I obviously did LOL....

Love, your favorite musician in the world, Scarlett

Here is a great review of the CD "The Soul of a Broken Mind" from Ravenheart Music in England:

LIPSHOK...'SOUL OF A BROKEN MIND'

(Self Release) Reviewed 11th March 2014

LIPSHOK is a female fronted band from California playing progressive symphonic metal that is unique, gothic, haunting, melodic, ethereal and highly commercial. This their latest offering is rather good. Fronted by Scarlett Dark (Debbi Douglas) who also takes care of keys and is the main songwriter, the band kick the album off with the pouding 'Path Of Stone' (
video link), which to me offers up an 80s feel with pouding guitars, a great guitar solo (compliments Art Cox) and liberal use of keys. Second up 'Just The One You Love' is an awesome power ballad, keeping that 80s retro feel going. This siegues very nicely into 'Evil Lost' - great use of keys and synths within the intro to this track. 'Against Me' is a massive power ballad with a huge guitar lead by guest guitarist, Glen Avelais, who toured with Testament and Forbidden. 'It's Over Now' keeps the momentum going, almost a bluesy feel incorporating another great guitar solo. 'Is It Far From You' sees the band slowing it down and going acoustic, while 'I Am No One' starts off with haunting keys, before turning into a pounding rocker, this number being a duet with Norman Skinner (Imagika, Skinner, and Dire Peril). The closing duo of 'Rain Of Fire' and 'Melancholy Madness' end the cd in an awesome fashion, the latter being an intimate song featuring piano, keys, and vocals only, and a rather nice way to end the record. Recorded, Mixed, and Mastered by Brad Barth at Audio Voyage Studios, Livermore, California, this album is rather good which to me offers modern day melodic rock & metal with an 80s influence. This is well recommended from the Ravenheart team. The band's Facebook is here

Here's a story from Rudeboy Magazine that came out in August 2014:

Sat. October 12th, 2013
The New CDs here! The new CDs here! Well, after about 4 and 1/2 months we have the new CD in hand! And I must say, it came out as great as I would hope. Thank you Brad Barth at Audio Voyage Recording in Livermore, CA for helping us to put out a CD we can be proud of. It's a variety of material, I don't write just one kind of song and I like that. There is metal, rock, gothic chords, a duet, a piano and strings ballad, and even a song with acoustic guitar! Ha ha, yeah, we push the boundaries and hope there is something for everyone on there. It is available on line at CD Baby, Amazon, and itunes of course and at shows with merchandise even!!!

I have to thank new guitarist Art Cox. He joined the band, brought in finally the guitar dimension we've been looking for for several years, and had to jump into the studio in like 2 weeks. As well as get on stage fast!! And he did and he is FANTASTIC!

On this CD we have some guest performances: Glen Avelais (from Forbidden and Testament fame) playing 2 leads: on Against Me and I am No One. And a guest vocalist, Norman Skinner, (from Imagika and Skinner and Dire Peril) doing a duet with me on I am No One. You will be surprised to hear this.

Cheers!

Scarlett

"LIPSHOK..'IN DARKNESS LIGHT'
(Self Release) Reviewed 27th August 2010

Americans Lipshok have spent years as a party covers band but here they present their own songs. They have obviously absorbed their classic rock repertoire which comes through on every song. This is like listening to one of those compilations dads get for father’s day. Singer Scarlett Dark has a deep voice that sounds like a mixture of Eric Burdon, Roger Chapman and Ozzy Osborne which only adds to the classic rock vibe. Rainbow, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Uriah Heep, Magnum, Black Sabbath, Argent and the kitchen sink are thrown into the blender. I kept thinking ‘ooh, that sounds like, ummm, yes that, ummm, you know, arghhh I can’t remember’, racking my poor brain until it hurt, so I gave up and just enjoyed the music. For example, you can quite easily sing ‘Sailing’ along to ‘Find My Way Home’ and ‘Nights in White Satin’ along to ‘Dream in a Cloud’. They could slip any of the songs from this album into the next party booking and nobody would notice! If you are a lover of classic melodic rock then you will find it for sale at CD Baby, and their website is
http://www.lipshok2000.com/
. This is great fun to listen to, when you stop trying to place the tunes, so I’m off for another dad dance, 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Phil).

All in all, a very interesting review and an unusual take I wouldn't have thought of.  Notice all the comparisons are with British musicians...

Thanks for reading and keep listening!

LIPSHOK: In Darkness, Light.

I hope that you can travel as much as I did (and still do of course) while listening to this music. The songs come from another realm of time and space, and the stories are magickal and thought provoking....spirits, forests, creatues, love, hate, ancients beliefs and Deities, and more of course, it's all there for you to visit and believe in...

LIPSHOK: The Soul of a Broken Mind

Now available, this CD is fantastic!! It really travels alternate universes, stories of insanity, loneliness, revenge, love, dark worlds and amazing sights, and believing in yourself no matter what anyone else says. SCarlett went a lot deeper into her own world, insecurity, and darkness to come up with these 9 songs and stories that once again open your mind to new visions and realities....
